Dog-loving celebrities and sports personalities are giving their full support to Puppy Farm Awareness Day which takes place this year on 19th September 2009.
This special day will help to educate the millions of people in the UK who are considering buying a puppy but are unsure who to contact and what to do next about purchasing one.
Located in remote areas of our British countryside Puppy Farms mass-produce puppies which are usually removed from their mothers too early, transported across the country to dealers, who then sell them from the internet, pet shops, free newspapers or even motorway service stations.
As a result these poor puppies are bought lacking socializing skills and commonly suffer from fatal health problems including pneumonia, parvovirus, as well as dangerous infestations of fleas and worms, often requiring hundreds of pounds of veterinary or behavioural treatment to fix.

Breeding bitches are usually kept in cages or small pens, rarely see daylight or touch grass, and are mated on every heat – just being fed enough to keep them producing pups, with little or no veterinary care at all.
ThePet.net co-founders TV Vet Marc Abraham and social media guru Andrew Seel wanted the British public to know the truth about where badly-bred puppies come from to help them choose a happy and healthy puppy rather than a sick or diseased farmed one.
The ‘World’s Biggest Puppy Party’ invites all puppies and owners to take part in a fun gathering to raise national awareness about such an important and serious animal welfare issue.
This unique day will also feature a funky doggy shopping area, Scruffts cross-breed heats, assistance dog displays as well as an all-day celebrity-judged fun dog show open to dogs of all ages, with Ex-World Champion boxer Michael Watson MBE judging ‘Best Boxer Dog’!
TV Vet Marc Abraham says “I am treating more and more puppies that have come from puppy farms than ever before. It’s not the owners fault, they would rather have a happy and healthy pup, but aren’t keen to wait or spend the money in these tough economic times. So here are my tips for choosing a puppy:
1. For a pedigree (specific breed) puppy then always contact the Kennel Club first for their list of reliable and reputable breeders.
2. Ask to see the puppy’s mother (and preferably father) who should always be present.
3. Be suspicious of any breeder selling more than one (maximum two) type of breed.
4. Be prepared to be put on a waiting list – a healthy puppy is well-worth waiting for.
5. Ask if you can return the puppy if things don’t work out. Most responsible breeders will always say yes.
6. Never buy a puppy because you feel like you’re rescuing it. You’ll only be making space available for another poorly pup to fill.
7. Consider cheaper alternatives to buying a pedigree puppy like getting a rescue dog or pup, and remember that every breed of dog has its own rescue society.”
The World’s Biggest Puppy Party is a non-profit dog-show at Brighton Racecourse, Freshfield Road, Brighton, on 19th September 2009. Admission is a donation to be split between three charities: Hope Rescue, Sussex Pet Rescue and Pro Dogs Direct who rescue and rehabilitate ex-breeding bitches and stud-dogs.
All puppies (over twelve weeks of age) and dogs attending must have registered beforehand, have all their vaccinations upto date and all owners will be required to provide their vaccination certificates for inspection. Failure to do this will result in you and your dog being turned away and there will be no exceptions to this rule.

my heart was broken watchung the video the coucil should be held responsible for allowing such cruelty,it is just a business with out compassion…..having rescue dogs and giving a little tlc ensures a friend for life…..to allow a licence to be given to breed not only puppies but such cruelty is disgusting,,,the puppy farm owners should be in prison and the council for allowing such awful conditions…………also would like to book a stand if pos ring 07833163544
marc whom i have met on a few occasions is a compassionate caring humane being
Puppy Farms should be banned. The government should step in & stop this practice & the Kennel Club
should not allow these dogs to be registered with them. There is no excuse for the constant breeding of these animals.(Where is the RSPCA) Why are they not shutting them down?. The council’s that give these people licences need education or is the money more important.
Sadly the RSPCA have no jurisdiction as they are severely restricted by the laws in the UK. We should follow the USA model where they have far greater powers to confiscate animals who aren’t being properly cared for.
We have a pet shop near my home that sells puppy farm pets and we cannot get the Council to revoke their licence. Unless this practice is made illegal and people learn NOT to buy from these people, the practice will continue.
Thanks so much for all your support guys, this event wouldn’t be possible without it. Remember to tell all the dog lovers you know to register for free tickets on thepet.net and hopefully we will be able to stop puppy farming for good.
i just want to pick up on something on the ‘picking a puppy’ list. As the Kennel Club also lists puppy farmers, people shouldn’t rely solely on their recommendation to find a reputable breeder. The other points on the list should always apply too!
My perfect dog came from a rescue.
The legislation that is in place is frequently not implemented by local authorities, and it does not go nearly far enough to stop this despicable trade.
The government continues to fail our faithful friends, and should be deeply ashamed of their failures.
The general public have to be made aware of the terrible lives that these animals endure, and refuse to buy from puppy farms or pet shops.
I totally support the “Puppy Party” and hope that the event is well covered by newspapers and TV.
Hi there i wish to inform you of the court date the 14th september 09,at Sittingbourne magistrates, kent where there will be 2 cases of horrifc animal crulety where 1 case of puppy farmers in teyham whentsfarm, and the other is a man who hammered his dog to death. I will be attending this date to see the out come and hope that justice will be served to these poor dogs that had a one way ticket to death, used and abused for profit .If you would also like to support this then PLEASE come along where my self and friends will be attending .
The sad thing is that these people have another property in Ashford , kent also a huge puppy farming bussiness that is still opperating under a different bourough . If we can make this known mayb we might be able to save many other suffering dogs.
Regards Terri x
All respectable breeders of pedigree dogs must put pressure on the authorities to ban this misery.
The Kennel Club and the RSPCA and the other dog charities should stop falling out and work together to help the public to learn where to buy a puppy from. The puplic MUST learn that you do not buy a puppy on impulse it is a big commitment and should not be undertaken lightly. DOGS ARE NOT FASHION ACCESSORIES, they are living feeling creatures like you and I
Will there be photos from the event? Call me soft, but I love photos of puppies
